How Jungle Bound Creates Social and Environmental Impact

At Jungle Bound, sustainability is not something we add to a product after it is designed. It is the reason we exist. Founded in 2020 by Pratiksha Shelke, a mechanical engineer and former automotive product-development professional, Jungle Bound was built around a simple idea: can we create a business that creates value for people and the planet at the same time? As a women-founded and women-led manufacturing business, creating opportunities for women has been an important part of our journey. At the same time, our work focuses on reducing waste, using reclaimed and renewable materials, creating local employment, developing skills and creating alternatives to conventional materials.

Giving Waste Wood a Second Life

A large part of our work is focused on giving discarded wood another life. We source wood from places such as old buildings, discarded pallets, packaging and industrial scrap and transform it into useful products. Since our inception, we have diverted more than 60 tonnes of scrap wood from being discarded. Working with reclaimed wood, however, is not as simple as picking up waste and turning it into a product. One of our team members spends considerable time sourcing good-quality reclaimed wood. Even after carefully sourcing it, there is inevitably some wastage because the wood has already been used. Pieces may have nails, cracks, holes, uneven dimensions or other damage. But we still manage to make most of our products from this reclaimed material. This is what makes working with reclaimed wood meaningful to us. We are not just choosing an environmentally friendly material that is readily available. We are putting considerable effort into recovering a material that would otherwise have very little value or become waste.

Choosing Materials We Believe In

Our factory has the capability to process materials such as acrylic and MDF. However, we consciously turn down orders when fulfilling them would require us to use materials that do not align with our environmental values. For us, sustainability is not only about what we say about our products. It also influences the business opportunities we choose to accept. We believe that having the capability to manufacture something does not mean that we should manufacture it. Instead, we try to focus on materials and products that are aligned with the reason Jungle Bound exists.

Creating Alternatives to Conventional Materials

We develop products using reclaimed wood and bamboo as alternatives to conventional materials, particularly for products that are often made from virgin plastic or other less sustainable materials. Our range includes corporate gifts, office accessories, home utility products, mementos, toys and customised products. We don't believe that every wooden or bamboo product is automatically more sustainable than every plastic product. Sustainability depends on the entire lifecycle of a product. Our objective is to create well-designed, useful and durable alternatives where natural or reclaimed materials make sense.

Empowering Women Through Manufacturing

Women empowerment is an important part of the Jungle Bound journey. As a business started by a woman, we have seen the importance of creating workplaces where women can take up technical and manufacturing roles. Around 50% of our team is women. Many of the women we hired were freshers with no previous experience in woodworking or technical fields. We trained them to work with several CNC and woodworking machines and gradually take on more technical responsibilities. For us, the most rewarding part is not simply seeing someone learn to operate a machine. It is seeing their confidence grow as they upskill themselves. Someone who may have started with little or no technical experience can gradually learn a new machine, understand a manufacturing process, take responsibility for their work and realise that they are capable of much more than they initially thought. We believe that women empowerment is not simply about increasing the number of women in the workforce. It is about giving women access to skills, responsibility, technical knowledge, income and opportunities for growth.

Creating Opportunities to Learn

Not everyone who joins Jungle Bound comes from a sustainability, woodworking or manufacturing background. But many of our team members have a genuine interest in learning. They learn about materials, machines, manufacturing processes and the challenges of working with natural and reclaimed materials. There is something particularly rewarding about seeing people who did not come from these fields develop an interest in the materials they work with and become confident in handling them. For us, this learning is an important part of the social impact of manufacturing.

Making Manufacturing More Circular

Manufacturing inevitably creates waste. Working with reclaimed wood and bamboo is no different. We generate offcuts, sawdust and other residues during production, and continuously look for ways to reuse or repurpose these materials. Our goal is to use the material entering our factory as efficiently as possible and ensure that “waste” is the last destination, not the first assumption. This is part of our larger belief in circular manufacturing: Recover → Reprocess → Manufacture → Use → Reuse

Creating Impact Through Our Customers

Our impact also extends through the businesses and organisations that purchase our products. When a company chooses a reclaimed wood or bamboo product for corporate gifting, events, offices or other applications, it creates demand for alternative materials and responsible local manufacturing. This creates a larger cycle: Customer demand → Sustainable products → Responsible materials → Local manufacturing → Employment → Greater demand for sustainable alternatives We believe this is how sustainability can move beyond individual choices and become part of normal business activity.

The Numbers Behind Our Impact

Since Jungle Bound began, we have:

  • Diverted more than 60 tonnes of scrap wood
  • Avoided an estimated 50 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions through the reuse of reclaimed wood
  • Produced and sold more than 3,200 sustainable products every month
  • Engaged with more than 1,450 customers
  • Created livelihoods for local artisans and employees
  • Built a team that is approximately 50% women
  • Trained freshers and women in technical manufacturing skills, including CNC machine operation

But numbers tell only part of the story. Behind every tonne of material diverted is a resource that was given another life. Behind every product is a person who helped make it. Behind every woman who learns to operate a machine is a new skill and a growing sense of confidence. And behind every customer choosing an alternative material is a small shift towards a different way of doing business.

What Impact Means to Us

We don't believe that calling something “sustainable” automatically makes it sustainable. Every product has an environmental footprint. Our responsibility is to continuously find ways to reduce negative impact and increase positive impact. For us, impact means:

  • Giving waste materials another life
  • Using resources more responsibly
  • Creating meaningful local livelihoods
  • Creating opportunities for women in manufacturing
  • Developing technical and entrepreneurial skills
  • Creating alternatives to unnecessary plastic
  • Building products that are useful and durable
  • Continuously improving the way we manufacture
  • Making conscious choices about the materials and orders we accept

We started Jungle Bound with the belief that waste can become a resource and that business can create opportunities for people while being responsible towards the planet. Today, we are building a business around that belief—one product, one person and one piece of reclaimed material at a time. Because for us, sustainability isn't just what we sell.
It is how we choose to build the business.
